The Breakout is an escape room challenge that appears during the Fall Term of Escape Academy. It is a radio-communication puzzle in which you relay coded messages over a radio unit and wait for the responses to play out on the monitors. Completing it unlocks the "Remote Rescue" achievement [src-f825a4961b].

Unlocking The Breakout

The Breakout becomes available partway through the Fall Term. After you've had a chance to explore the dorm, head out to the thresher and speak with Jeb, then make your way to the top of the map and enter the headmaster's office. Entering the office pans the camera to the left and reveals the new puzzle, The Breakout [src-cc415a0c9f].

How to Complete

As with every escape, the level opens with a short cinematic that you can skip [src-cc415a0c9f]. The core loop of this room is communicating over a radio: you input a code, transmit it, and wait for the reply before moving on to the next step.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Inspect the radio unit. Move forward and interact with the radio in front of you to begin the sequence [src-cc415a0c9f].
  2. Send your first message. Enter write, then press the yellow Wi-Fi signal in the top-right corner to transmit the message [src-cc415a0c9f].
  3. Wait for the response. Each time you send a message, a short cutscene plays on the monitors lasting roughly 10–20 seconds. You must let it finish before the game asks you for the next step [src-cc415a0c9f].
  4. Enter the second code. Return to the radio on the right and input 160, then press the yellow Wi-Fi signal to send it [src-cc415a0c9f].
  5. Wait again. Watch the monitors until the sequence concludes [src-cc415a0c9f].
  6. Enter the third code. Go back to the radio and input 10-10 — radio shorthand for "no." The dashes are optional; you can type it as 10-10 or without them [src-cc415a0c9f]. Press the Wi-Fi signal to transmit.
  7. Continue the terminal questions. After this, you'll be asked which computer terminal the computer can be found on, and the sequence continues from there [src-cc415a0c9f].

Follow the same pattern for the remainder of the room: read the prompt, input the correct code on the radio, press the yellow Wi-Fi signal, and wait for the monitors to finish before proceeding.

Tips

  • Always press the yellow Wi-Fi signal. Entering a code does nothing on its own — the message only transmits when you press the button in the top-right corner [src-cc415a0c9f].
  • Be patient with the cutscenes. The monitor sequences run about 10–20 seconds each and cannot be skipped; wait for them to end before trying the next input [src-cc415a0c9f].
  • Learn a little radio speak. The level leans on radio terminology — the guide notes that phrases like "10-4" and "over" are the kind of language you'll be using, and 10-10 means "no" [src-cc415a0c9f].
  • Grab the newspaper. A copy of "The Escapist Times" for this escape is located on the desk to the right of the door [src-f825a4961b]. Reading different editions counts toward the "Extra, Extra!" achievement [src-f825a4961b].

Rewards

Escaping The Breakout unlocks the Remote Rescue achievement [src-f825a4961b]. As with other escapes, finishing within the time limit without using hints earns you a higher grade, which counts toward the "Honor Roll" and "Overachiever" achievements for earning B+ or A+ grades on ten escapes [src-f825a4961b].
