Gillian is a character in Escape Academy who accompanies the player through the story and undergoes a sudden change in heart. She appears both as a conversational NPC on campus and as a direct rival in competitive puzzle rooms. This guide covers how to interact with her, how to handle the head-to-head Rival Room encounter, and how to work through the story chapter where she joins you in your dorm room.
Finding and Talking to Gillian on Campus
Gillian can be found in the quad, standing in the middle of the area. Work your way through the optional side conversations available on the map — you can start near the top by the headmaster's office, then move to the quad to talk to Gillian (referred to in some sources as Jillian), and continue to the library at the bottom right for another conversation [src-cc415a0c9f]. Running through these conversations contributes toward the achievement for eight optional side conversations — if you've been following the route, you'll unlock it here; if not, there are plenty of chances later [src-cc415a0c9f].
[The Rival Room: Beating Gillian Head-to-Head
The Rival Room pits you in a head-to-head race against your rival Gillian, and the goal is to beat her across five rounds of puzzles [src-0f3d11182e]. The walkthrough lists a completion time of roughly 35 minutes and a difficulty rating of 4/5 [src-0f3d11182e].
Round 1: Fire the Ballista
To your immediate left is a red panel with missing Gears. You need to find three Gears [src-0f3d11182e]:
- Large Gear — in the orange box to the left of the red panel.
- Medium Gear — in the dark box to the right of the red panel.
- Small Gear — in the white cupboard to the left of the orange box.
Place them in the correct holes on the red panel [src-0f3d11182e]:
- Large Gear: Bottom Left hole
- Medium Gear: Far Right hole
- Small Gear: Centre hole
Then interact with the Gears by turning the one on the far left (the one with the handle). All the Gears should turn, firing the Ballista and moving you to round two [src-0f3d11182e].
Round 2: Identify Your Targets
This area contains statues with names on them. The key is the question on the sign at the far end of the room: "Which 3 can you both see?" The "both" refers to you and Gillian, who is solving the puzzle through the cage to your right [src-0f3d11182e]. Hidden in the letters on the cage are names matching the statues. To appear the same from both perspectives, two things must be true [src-0f3d11182e]:
- The name needs to be spelled vertically.
- The letters in the name all need to be vertically symmetrical.
Only three names satisfy this. Move those statues to the back of the arena onto the three plinths. The solution is MAX, WYATT, and TIMMY [src-0f3d11182e]. Placing them opens the next stage.
Round 3: Balance the Scales
Pick up the weights on the left-hand side: Red, Blue, Orange, Green, and White [src-0f3d11182e]. Each weight is between 1KG and 5KG with a different value. Weigh them against each other to determine the order, then input the values into the machine to the right to track them and assist with the next part [src-0f3d11182e].
Chapter 4: Solvers Keepers (Dorm Room Sequence)
In Chapter 4's "Solvers Keepers," speak to Gillian in your dorm room and advance the story when ready, then go into the bathroom and talk to Gillian again [src-0dc02cf791]. Pay attention to what she says and work out which schematic is correct — in the walkthrough's run, the correct schematic was A. Keep directing her until she reaches the green target square; the walkthrough used the sequence south, west, north, north, west, north, then east [src-0dc02cf791]. Afterward, leave the dorm room and head to the headmaster's office up the next flight of stairs, and talk to Gillian there [src-0dc02cf791].
Tips
- In the Rival Room, remember that Gillian is solving the same puzzle from her side of the cage — always consider what she can see from her perspective when evaluating clues [src-0f3d11182e].
- The Rival Room is rated 4/5 difficulty, so budget time for the weight-balancing round in particular [src-0f3d11182e].
- Don't worry if you miss the eight-conversation achievement during your campus sweep — you'll have lots of chances later [src-cc415a0c9f].
